Billionaire philanthropist Jon Huntsman, owner of Utah-based chemical conglomerate Huntsman Corporation, is the man behind an ambitious 1,350-acre residential development in Teton Valley that boasts a David McLay Kidd course as its core golfing component.

To the tune of around $20 million, Huntsman funded the construction of a course that saw many of the fairways lowered—over 50 feet in places—and all the holes plated with a nine-inch layer of sand to achieve movement in the land and create the desired finish.

Water channels were also installed by Huntsman's development partner Mike Stears and his local company, MD Nursery, with the architect choosing to make the narrow water features an integral part of the design after he’d seen a "demo" on the 7th hole during the build.

When the completed, natural-looking course at Huntsman Springs is now viewed, it’s hard to image that a reported four million cubic yards of soil was moved during construction, enhancing the views of the towering Grand Tetons and Big Hole mountains to the east and west of the property in the process.

The architect certainly seems pleased with what has been achieved here as he’s been quoted as saying: "What we delivered on the space and what we've done creatively at Huntsman Springs could be the best work we've ever done. We used all our creativity on a flat, muddy field in Idaho. It makes me proud of myself and my team."

In 2019, the ownership discarded the moniker Huntsman Springs and renamed the property Tributary.

David McLay Kidd

David McLay Kidd's father was a greenkeeper at Glasgow Golf Club. As a child he’d listen to his father’s golf ramblings while as a teenager he’d earn pocket money raking bunkers for his dad.
