Surrounded by natural bushland, the course at Horizons Golf Resort is a Graham Marsh and Ross Watson collaboration, with boardwalks guiding golfers around natural wetland areas at some of the holes on a very eco-diverse layout.

From the book 1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die, edited by Jeff Barr:

“Laid out near the popular vacation town of Port Stephens, this parkland course features man-made lakes, stretches of marshland, and fairways lined with tea trees, with most holes separated by different kinds of vegetation.

The idea is to give Horizons a feel of individual, memorable holes, and the sort of experience resort guests expect and want. Horizons counts its par three eighth [now the 17th after the nines were reversed] as perhaps the most popular hole on the course.

The smallish, two-tiered green is surrounded by wetland, which grow thickly and also run along the right side of the putting surface, posing an intimidating lateral water hazard to anyone pushing his ball in that direction.

Come up short with your tee shot, and your ball will likely be engulfed by the sinister bunkering in front, and there is out of bounds on the left for anyone who comes over the top a bit too strongly.”
