The course at Highland Country Club lies a few miles south of downtown London and it’s a Stanley Thompson track dating back to 1922. Interestingly, the club refused to pay the ‘Toronto Terror’ his full fee “for not completing the work”.

The following extract is taken from The Toronto Terror by James A. Barclay:

Fraser’s 1923 lists this as an 18-hole course by George Cumming. Canadian Golfer reprints his letter to the club, dated November 18, 1921, recommending the property as suitable for a golf course. The course was probably laid out and constructed by Thompson, Cumming and Thompson.

The club’s history, published in 1997, records that ‘Stanley Thompson… was hired to design and supervise construction of the new course… The Board refused to pay his full fee, withholding $620 for not completing the work, for which the club was put to considerable extra expense.’

Highland had paid Thompson $1,000 expenses and $5,000 to seed nine holes and construct nine tees and greens.”

Today, the 18-hole layout extends to 6,582 yards, playing to a par of 72, with holes arranged as two returning nines. Ian Andrew was engaged in 2019 to restore all the bunkers on the course.

Stanley Thompson

Becoming a golf course architect after the First World War was perfect timing for Stanley Thompson. Canada’s golf courses numbered around 130 in 1918, rising to more than 350 seven years later.
