Hermitage Country Club moved to its Goochland site in 1977 where Ed Ault constructed 27 holes, 18 of which now comprise the Manakin layout. Arthur Hills added a fourth nine in 1989 and this circuit, combined with nine from the original layout, form the 18-hole Sabot course.

Originally founded in 1900, Hermitage is reckoned to be the fourth oldest country club in Virginia. The club hosted the PGA Championship in 1949, which was won by Sam Snead, and the A.W. Tillinghast-designed layout used for the event, now the Belmont Golf Course, is owned and operated by the Henrico County Department of Recreation and Parks.

Today, the Manakin course extends to 6,954 yards from the back tees, playing to a par of 72. Notable holes on the front nine include the heavily sand-protected par three 4th and the short par four 6th. On the back nine, the green for the long par three 16th sits enticingly behind a water hazard, with the 18th fairway veering left from the tee to the home green.
