Sand Hollow, the top-ranked golf club in Utah, is not the only golf course in the St. George area that can celebrate its dramatic, red rock canyon shots. Green Spring Golf Course, the municipal course for the city of Washington, has two that can stand with the best at Sand Hollow.
No. 5 is a par three that asks for a 175-yard carry across a canyon to a green perched on the edge. The next hole is even more demanding: A par four measuring 450 yards, the tee shot will be straight out. The reckoning comes on the approach, where players will need to make a 150 to 180-yard carry across the canyon to yet another precarious green. There is a fairway apron for those who would rather play this as a par 4.5. If you don’t make it on the first try, the course rangers strongly recommend using the drop area on the other side of the canyon.
The name of the canyon seems to change depending on what hole you’re playing: At the former, it’s known as the “Bottomless Pit.” When you head to the latter, the sinister landform becomes known as “The Devil’s Gulch.”
