The 18-hole layout at the Eye of Africa Golf Club lies within an enormous residential property created by Australian developer Medallist for Great White Shark Enterprises and the Macquarie Group. It’s Greg Norman’s first Signature course on the African continent, opening in the summer of 2010.
The course is big and bold with wide inviting fairways leading to large, gently sloping greens that run firm and fast. Many of the tee positions are elevated so golfers can see all before them, eliminating any nasty surprises from hidden bunkers.
The 18 holes are routed in an out and back fashion through some hilly terrain and such is the scale of the layout – with substantial distances between a number of the holes – the use of a cart during a round is mandatory.
There’s an expansive feel to playing golf on a course like this (where tees can be set up to play as long as 7,590 yards within an estate of more than 1,600 acres) so it can only be hoped that the future construction of hundreds of residential units on the property is completed as sympathetically as possible to preserve the ambience.
The South African PGA championship moved here for five editions of the tournament in 2016, with Jaco Van Zyl winning his third title in seven years after overcoming Dean Burmester in a playoff.
