Site of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball team tournament in 2018, the course at El Caballero Country Club is a Robert Trent Jones Snr remodelled layout from an early 1960s William Johnson design, characterised by gently doglegging, tree-lined fairways and well-bunkered greens.
Rees Jones and his design associate Steve Weisser completed a 9-month restoration project in 2021, replacing all the turfgrass with hybrid Bermuda. The new development also included some tree removal, regrading of fairways, repositioning of bunkers and redesign of all the greens. The expansion of native landscaping areas will also save the use of 35 million gallons of water every year.
“We opened the entrance to a lot of greens,” said Jones. “We wanted to allow for the player that doesn’t hit the ball very far a better chance to access the greens. Members will still recognise the course but there are a lot of minor changes that can make a big difference, and there are some major changes like the 6th and 10th greens that are dramatically better and receive shots more readily.”
