Eastlake Golf Club is one of Sydney’s genuinely unheralded layouts which lies in the shadows of a trio of highly ranked sandbelt courses. Laid out on two narrow strips of sandy ground, Eastlake has recently polished its golfing offering and it’s now set to be a NSW golfing force to be reckoned with.

The club dates back to 1930 when nine holes were brought into play. Two years later, there was an 18-hole layout in operation. Nowadays, the course measures just over 5,800 metres from the back tees and plays to a par of 72 (37 for the front nine then 35 for the shorter back nine).

Unusually, the first par three hole isn’t played until reaching the 174-metre 9th (“Wee Burn”). Holes 5 to 13 are laid out on a separate piece of property which is accessed by a bridge over a main highway.

Highlights at Eastlake include the slightly left doglegging par four 8th (“Devil’s Elbow”) which plays over a large wasteland area in front of an offset green, and the par five 15th (Hooker’s Horror”) which narrows considerably as the fairway approaches a heavily sand-protected green.
