Co-designed by Gene Bates and Johnny Miller, the course at Due Process Stable was built by the proceeds of one of the “Great frauds in history” according to a MoneyWeek report. “Robert Brennan used high-pressure techniques to sell worthless penny shares to unwitting investors, defrauding them of more than $300m… This allowed Brennan to indulge in a lavish lifestyle... In 1992 he splashed out $40m on building the Due Process golf club."

Today the course at Due Process Stable is a demanding one, especially from the tips, even though the property’s topography is relatively flat. From the Belmont tees, the layout stretches to 7,138 yards and the horseracing theme continues further forward at the Derby (6,570 yards) and Preakness (5,972 yards) tees.

Despite being one of the nation’s more expensive private clubs to join, those lucky enough to receive an invite will be treated like royalty for the duration of their stay and in terms of dress code, just about anything goes.

Architect Gene Bates (who formerly worked with Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus) commented as follows in his digital magazine:

“As a golf course architect working with Johnny Miller, I am proud of the transformation Due Process Stable made from a successful Thoroughbred horse stable to a magnificent golf course which opened in 1995.

The course has ’18 signature holes’ with each having a distinctive characteristic presenting challenges and opportunities for all. To keep the Thoroughbred stable feel, turf grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescues were used to frame the fairways and greens.

The waterfalls and stream with the rock bridge on No. 8 all add to the experience. As a player, I can vividly remember each hole, the challenges and opportunities presented to me. These are the marks of a great golf course.”
