In the book Golf in India: The Ultimate Golfing Guide, authors Phil Ryan and Paul Reeves describe Chandigarh as follows:
“Beginning in 1962 as a 9-hole course, the 7052-yard fully turfed championship course was commissioned in 1983. The 18-hole course is set over 132 acres in the planned city of Chandigarh. The course is dotted with thick mango, jamun, eucalyptus and kikar groves, As well as a variety of rose buses.
This is a busy course with up to 500 players teeing off on weekends.”
It’s reckoned the course manager of Delhi Golf Club set out the original layout, comprising nine tees and eight greens, with the putting surface for the 1st hole also used on the 3rd. Later on, another three holes were added, allowing members the option of playing twelve unique holes instead of the same nine twice.
In the late 1970s, the club managed to acquire more land, allowing the course to be expanded to an 18-hole layout, with Peter Thomson commissioned to oversee this extension.
