Catawba Island

Ohio, despite a significant stretch of land abutting Lake Erie, has a curious lack of shoreline golf (at least compared to neighbor Michigan). That feature alone makes the Catawba Island Club stand out among courses in its home state. Still, it’s an easy drive: Catawba has not been an island since locals constructed a terrain connector to the mainland long ago.

The club exists largely to satisfy a population of second-home owners in the area, and — similar to golf courses with similar purpose in Florida — Arthur Hills has provided a somewhat adventurous second-home course. Water hazards abound, both manmade and natural. Perhaps the most daunting area of the property will be the corner of Lake Erie that creeps under a roadway, which Hills based three holes around; No. 14 requires a 110 yard carry over the inlet to a peninsular green surround on three sides by water, and Hills repeats the tactic on the next hole, this time requiring 150 yards of carry to a green angled against the lakeside. Finally, the fairway of No. 16 features the lake along its left side.

The course is not overly long, at 6,700 yards, but it may require an extra sleeve of balls.
