Castlecomer Golf Club was originally nominated as a GEM by Rory and was added to the Top 100 website on the 17th December 2007 - Rory's comments follow:
Castlecomer, designed by Pat Ruddy, has recently been extended from a 9 to an 18-hole course and it provides one of the finest tests of golf anywhere in Ireland at a very reasonable price. The first four holes can make or break anyone’s card and with its wonderful design and excellent greens, Castlecomer Golf Club provides a wonderful test for scratch golfer and high handicapper. It is a course that I enjoy coming back to again and again and deserves to be recognised as true "GEM".
Pat Ruddy, course designer. commented as follows:
"Seldom does one come across a site so admirably positioned and suited for golf. Right along the main thoroughfares and yet protected from casual wanderers by the River Deen, the site lends itself to good golf. Gently undulating and well endowed with mature trees such as Oak, Turkey Oak, Sycamore, Maple, Lime, Horsechesnut, Spanish Chestnut, Elm, Ash, Douglas Fir, Australian Pine, Beech and Copper Beech, the club is fortunate to have acquired such a site as the old lawns of the Wandesforde Estate".
