Canebrake Country Club takes its name from the Canebrake Lake, a small body running along the property in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The course has plenty of room to wander vertically, as Jerry Pate led the front nine toward the northern tip of the lake before returning to the clubhouse, and the second nine heading toward the southern tip.
There is very little to be said for second-cut at this club...those who are wayward from the tee might wish for higher rough, lest their ball run to the edges of the fairways, where forests separate holes from fairways heading in the opposite direction.
Although Canebrake Lake itself does not come into play during the round, players will be tested by smaller bodies of water, which anchor both ends of the property. During the front nine, holes five through eight will come into varying degrees of contact with a lake, while on the back nine, par threes at Nos. 12 and 16 will play over and along the same pond.
The course is home to the team representing nearby William Carey University. Canebrake is a member of the ClubCorp network of clubs.
