Bosch Hoek
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa- AddressBalgowan, South Africa
Designed with nine holes and eighteen teeboxes, the once-private course at Bosch Hoek Golf Club in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is an early 1960s Bob Grimsdell layout which has recently been upgraded with bent grass greens by Golf Data.
In the 1960s, the estate was acquired by businessman Punch Barlow, who was a founding member of the private River Club in Johannesburg. Bob Grimsdell was engaged to design that course, on the understanding that he would also lay out the 9-holer on Barlow’s property near Balgowan.
When Barlow died in 1979, his stepson took over and continued to operate the course as a private enterprise until 1990, when he formed the Bosch Hoek Golf Club & Country Estate then subsequently sold the business to the homeowners on the property. They then sold the course to entrepreneur Ivan Clark, who now runs the club as a public facility.
Sean Quinn of Golf Data oversaw the upgrade of the greens and remodelling of the two par fives on the club’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Bosch Hoek dam comes into play on #6 and #7, with water threatening to the left on both these holes, and a round on this parkland beauty concludes with a left doglegging par four that heads back to the home green in front of the clubhouse.
