Bozeman, Montana sits within the Gallatin Valley, a relative flatland offering the optimal location for a city in what is otherwise a quite mountainous state. The benefits to the location are obvious at Black Bull, a private club built around a planned community, as players will be surrounded by majestic views of peaks throughout the round, without participating in “mountain golf.”
Tom Weiskopf has certainly built courses both at high altitude and on flat land, so he came with a few tricks to ensure that the even terrain here did not result in sub-par golf. One obvious concept was to make up for the lack of big hills by placing bigger hazards...the majority of fairway traps at this club are sizable but a few are outright monumental.
The Nos. 1 and 9 holes are separated by a huge waste area, and No. 17 also features a hazard that can’t be missed (by the eye...by all means, try to avoid it with your ball). The difference in the latter case is that this is the signature Weiskopf drivable par four at Black Bull, and a shot at an eagle putt means getting the ball around (or over) the waste to find one of the largest greens on the property.
