Belfair (East)
Bluffton, South Carolina- Address200 Belfair Oaks Blvd, Bluffton, SC 29910, USA
Tom Fazio’s East course at Belfair Golf Club appeared in 1999, three years after his West course debuted at the same Bluffton location, and both layouts comprise a formidable challenge at this 36-hole facility.
The two 18-hole courses are set inside a wooded 1,100-acre residential development which lies along the inlets and wetlands of the Colleton River, with fairways routed around an estate that formerly operated as a cattle ranch in the 1950s and a turkey farm during the 1960s.
In The American Private Golf Club Guide, author Daniel Wexler writes: “The newer East course’s front nine is highlighted by the 330-yard 5th (driveable, but across a pond) and the difficult 474-yard 6th, but it is primarily the inward half that stands out.
The watery 440-yard 13th sets the stage for a challenging finish composed of the 534-yard 16th (guarded right by a tidal marsh), the 150-yard 17th (played across another vast bunker) and the 464-yard 18th, a long dog leg right bordered by sand for the entirety of its right side.
The club hosted the 52nd edition of the PGA Professional Championship in 2019, with both the East and West courses at Belfair used for the first the first two rounds of a prestigious event comprising 312 players.
