It is handy to have a golf course architect among your alumni when setting out a course for NCAA competition. In Auburn’s case, it was Bill Bergin, who played for the Tigers during his college years. Although Bergin may have been big man on campus, the golf course he built is even bigger, measuring more than 7,300 yards from the back tees, with tree-lined fairways defending the majority of those yards.
The course boasts of its setting on Yarbrough Lake, however that body only comes into play on one hole. The water that will change the result of more matches will be the unnamed pond northwest of Yarbrough. The course ends in a 5-3-4 alignment, and these holes are no pushovers.
The par five travels for 580 yards from the back tees, with the final approach to the putting surface being over a creek to a standalone green, with the anonymous pond at the back. The following par three plays for 210 yards, with the pond lurking on the right for its entirety. The final 440-yard par four won’t seem so bad, as long as your nerves aren’t shot from the previous holes.
