Doug Carrick and Jay Morrish collaborated in the design of the 18-hole North layout at Angus Glen and it debuted in 2001, six years after the South course was first unveiled.
As Carrick says about the project, “we chose to go with more of a links concept since the land tended to be a bit more open than the South course. With few trees to be found and generous fairways, fescue is the course’s main line of defence. The green complexes are heavily bunkered and closely mown grass roll-off collars call for a creative short game to score well”.
Fast forward another six years to 2007 and, with the North course in line to host that year’s Canadian Open, Love Golf Design was called in to upgrade the course before the event took place.
Davis Love III takes up the story: “This renovation was focused primarily from the tee boxes to the landing areas, creating more distance and specific angles of play by adding new tournament tees and drastically reducing the width of most fairways. A new bunker strategy was implemented through the addition of new bunkers and the removal of older ones, many of which contributed to numerous blind shots from the tee”.
Incidentally, Jim Furyk retained the trophy he had won for the first time the year before at Hamilton, with an aggregate score of 268, sixteen under par – so much for tightening up the course to curtail the top professionals.
Today’s course extends to all of 7,403 yards from the back markers, playing to a par of 72. The short par four 9th is a favourite hole of many golfers, offering a good chance to end the front nine with a birdie, as a well-placed shot from the tee should allow a short pitch and a putt for a birdie on the heavily sand-protected green.
